Hello! Our first post – GandaZwam BOX

Gandazwam BOX

There is no other way to start this blog than with our own GandaZwam Box, recently made available to the wider public. Instead of explaining what it is, let me start by telling you how it came to be.

About 7 years ago, my husband Bruno was searching for ways to make better use of our domestic residues. He came across the idea to grow edible mushrooms on used coffee grounds, and he really took to it. During his experiments he came across a local company that offered professional (and international) training on how to prepare substrates (the growing medium) for edible gourmet mushrooms. Bingo! Obviously he didn’t think about it twice and registered for the course.

Over the next few years, literally picking the fantastic fruits of try-outs and experiments with different cultivation techniques for several species of mushrooms on different types of domestic waste (paper, cardboard, coffee grounds), a whole world of possibilities opened up for us. We could now convert a part of our domestic waste into taste. It was a great feeling.

Based on our discoveries we created gandazwam.be, a project through which we have reached over 200 people that have followed our workshops. Bruno taught them a modern interpretation of artisanal techniques to grow mushrooms at home, amongst others on cardboard and coffee grounds. Several times the project was featured in local and national media, and Bruno was even invited to join the non-profit ‘Ministry of Ideas’ as the ‘Secretary of Mushrooms’.

Seeing how there was that much interest at that many levels, he took to the task of finding a system that would be easy to use, require only a moderate amount of time and effort, and be a useful tool in any kitchen to turn coffee grounds into tasteful mushrooms with a high probability of success. And that’s how the GandaZwam Box came to be.

The GandaZwam Box is a system : it consists out of 3 reusable containers made of chlorine-free recyclable plastic. The covers have integrated high-performance filters that will help keep the mushroom safe from competing micro-organisms, but will also allow it to breathe and retain its moisture. There is a container with mushroom spawn included, eager to grow on coffee grounds, as well as a living, biological product that will activate the mushroom’s full growing potential. The current instruction booklet counts 8 pages of advice that will show you, with care and practice, how to grow the best gourmet mushrooms that you will ever taste.

An additional bonus is that the majority of the elements of the Box are produced at less than 25km from our home.

So we were able to develop a sustainably produced, reusable system that allows you to home-grow delicious food on your own waste, with precious little food-kilometers. A big difference with Italian tomatoes or avocado’s from South Africa.

You can simply come and pick up this system at our house for only 35€. We’ll happily answer any questions you might have while learning to grow your mushrooms and, most importantly, we’ll love to share our EcoLifestyle with you, which is our main motivation.

And you ? What do you grow in and around your house? What techniques do you use? Do you have any knowledge of Permaculture?

Plese feel welcome to share your questions or remarks.

Thanks for being part of the change!

Gandazwam BOX
